Through tailored sessions, we empower clients to achieve their therapeutic goals in a dynamic outdoor environment, fostering growth, independence, and well-being.
Equine Assisted Learning Occupational Therapy
(EAL-OT) incorporates a broader range of activities beyond riding, focusing on engaging individual's in purposeful tasks and meaningful interactions with horses. These activities may include grooming, leading, and ground-based exercises (not ridden) tailored to address specific therapeutic objectives related to fine motor skills, sensory processing, communication, and psychosocial development.
Hippotherapy specifically involves the use of horseback riding as a therapeutic tool under the guidance of a trained therapist. The rhythmic, three-dimensional movement of the horse stimulates the rider's muscles, joints, and sensory systems, promoting improvements in balance, posture, coordination, and overall strength. Additionally, the bond formed between the rider and the horse can enhance emotional well-being, confidence, and social skills.
Both EAL-OT and Hippotherapy are conducted by a Specialised Occupational Therapist, working jointly with other Therapists and Trained Equine Professionals. Through carefully designed interventions and the unique partnership between human and horse, these modalities offer holistic and effective approaches to address the diverse needs of individuals across the lifespan, promoting independence, functional abilities, and overall quality of life.
Set within a lovely setting at Nuneaton & North Warwickshire Equestrian Centre (NNWEC), West Midlands and surrounding regions.
Ever since I was a child, horses had a special place in my heart. Their majestic presence and gentle nature captivated me. Little did I know that this childhood fascination would shape my career path and lead me to become a Specialist Occupational Therapist specialising in Equine therapy.
My journey began with a deep-seated desire to help others. I pursued a degree in Occupational Therapy, (2007) fascinated by the prospect of enabling individuals to live fulfilling lives despite their physical, emotional, or cognitive challenges. As I delved deeper into my studies, I discovered the profound impact that animals, particularly horses, could have on therapeutic interventions.
After completing my degree (2010) and gaining specialist experience in various healthcare settings, I decided to pursue specialised training in equine-assisted therapy. I qualified in Hippotherapy (2017) postgraduate training offered by the association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Therapeutic Riding and Hippotherapy, facilitated by Robert Gordon University. Which taught me how to integrate the unique qualities of horses into traditional occupational therapy practices.
Equine therapy offers an holistic approach to healing, addressing physical, emotional, and social aspects of well-being simultaneously. The rhythmic motion of riding a horse stimulates sensory processing and improves balance and coordination. Which is a fantastic base for Therapists to start their treatment. Interacting with horses fosters emotional regulation and builds trust and confidence within individuals. Furthermore, the bond formed between the individual and the horse facilitates communication and social skills development.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my work was witnessing the transformative power of equine therapy first-hand. Working with children/adults of all ages and backgrounds, each facing their own set of challenges. Whether it was a child with autism learning to communicate through grooming a horse or a veteran with PTSD finding solace in the quiet companionship of a horse, every success story reinforced my belief in the efficacy of this unconventional approach to therapy.
I also collaborate closely with other healthcare professionals, including an amazing Physiotherapist, and the fantastic team at Nuneaton and North Warwickshire Equestrian Centre and other members of the Multi- Disciplinary team to ensure comprehensive care. Together, we develop tailored treatment plans that incorporated equine therapy alongside traditional interventions, maximising the therapeutic benefits for each individual.
Over the years, I've witnessed countless breakthroughs and moments of triumph, as individual's overcame obstacles and discovered their strengths with the help of equine therapy. My passion for this field continues to grow with each success story, driving me to advocate for greater recognition and integration of equine therapy into mainstream healthcare practices.
As I reflect on my journey, I am grateful for the opportunity to combine my passion for horses with my dedication to helping others as an Specialised Occupational Therapist. Guided by the gentle wisdom of these magnificent animals, I am honoured to play a role in facilitating healing and transformation in the lives of those I have met. In the world of equine therapy, every hoofbeat is a testament to the boundless potential for growth and healing.
Testimonials
"I came across HEAL OT about 12 months ago purely ‘by accident’ but looking back it was more like Devine intervention!
In the last 6 months I have gotten to know Sarah and the other other staff at NNWEC quite well. The work they all do is simply outstanding. I have 2 young people who have each attended a programme with HEAL OT and the difference just an hour has made is unbelievable!
Sarah is passionate and compassionate, she takes the time to get to know the young people she is working with, what they like / don’t like. She somehow works her magic and gets them talking / communicating almost immediately. What is remarkable is that these young people were not even doing that at home with their families! I have seen confidence and self esteem rise rapidly, even the most anxious of young people are visibly relaxing and enjoying themselves almost immediately.
I can 100% say that HEAL OT is worth it’s weight in gold! I am so glad I stumbled upon this service and will continue to recommend and use it for years to come.
Thank you for everything you have done so far. I can’t wait to come back for more ❤️"
"As an OT student, I visited Sarah today to look around the stables and better understand what she does. she has been very approachable, professional and has given me such a good insight into what I need to be aware of and learn about as an OT if working in this type of environment. Sarah made me feel jealous of what she is able to achieve with her clients with the help of this environment and the horses Such a lovely, welcoming place! thank you Sarah, you are doing an amazing job"
"I am currently in the process of setting up an Equine Therapy business and would not have been able to get to where I am now without Sarah's help and support. She has given up her own time to give me advice and has put me in contact with some great organisations. She is very knowledgeable and I would highly recommend her services."
"My daughter has attended equine therapy with Sarah and the difference it has made has been astounding. Sarah is kind, patient and knowledgeable and has helped massively in our journey moving forward. Thank you."
"I cannot recommend Sarah enough , I reached out to her as a student wanting to know about Equine assisted OT . Sarah not only responded so quickly but spared her time to share her knowledge with me via zoom. I am so grateful to have conversations with Sarah, she is a fantastic OT and I can imagine she is really fab with her clients. It was so nice to speak to Sarah "
"Sarah is very knowledgeable and is more than happy to share her thoughts and expertise. As a student, it can, at times be challenging to find resources and spend time with qualified Occupational Therapists. Sarah is very approachable and was more than happy to chat with me, I wouldn't hesitate to contact her again in the future."
"Sarah offers such a unique therapy that’s benefits both the client and their family. From building confidence and social skills to improving fine and gross motor skills such as pen/pencil use, cutlery use to overall core and balance improvements. Hippo therapy has done far more in 7 short weeks than 3 years of general occupational therapy for my child the difference in our child is amazing and all thanks to the hard work and program offered by Sarah "
Gentle and Calming Nature: Horses have a naturally calm and peaceful demeanour. They can sense and respond to human emotions, providing a soothing and non-judgmental presence. Their large size and steady movements can be comforting to individuals, especially with Hippotherapy.
Non-Verbal Communication: Horses communicate primarily through body language and non-verbal cues, making them excellent partners for therapy. They can mirror the emotions and behaviour of humans, allowing individuals to better understand their own emotions and reactions.
Trust and Bonding: Horses are social animals that form strong bonds with their caretakers and riders. Through regular interaction, individuals can develop a sense of trust and connection with the horse, which can be particularly beneficial for individuals who have experienced trauma or struggle with trust issues.
Mindfulness and Presence: Working with horses requires individuals to be present in the moment and aware of their own emotions and body language. This mindfulness practice can help individuals develop self-awareness, emotional regulation, and a sense of control over their thoughts and actions.
Physical and Sensory Benefits: Interacting with horses can provide various physical benefits. Grooming, feeding, and ridden work involve physical activity, which can improve strength, coordination, and balance. Additionally, the tactile and sensory experience of being around horses can be calming and therapeutic.
Empowerment and Confidence: Accomplishing tasks and building a connection with a horse can enhance self-esteem and confidence. Horses offer individuals opportunities to set goals, overcome challenges, and experience a sense of achievement, which can be particularly empowering for those struggling with mental health issues.
Emotional Regulation: Horses can help individuals learn and practice emotional regulation skills. The horse's responsive nature provides immediate feedback to individuals, teaching them to manage their emotions effectively. Interacting with horses can be a safe space to express and process feelings.
